In the book, this dragon embodies the sinful nature of the mountain town it frequents. The people of that town are all deeply immersed in their sins and are marked by the dragon. Once they receive that mark, the dragon hunts them down and devours them.
It isn't until an outsider comes to town to avenge his brother's death (eaten by the dragon) that the dragon itself is revealed.
This scene depicts the moment when the character confronts the dragon for the first time.
Anyways, I recommend this novel, it's a thrilling read!

I could've taken the advice not to read that book at night. XD Couldn't sleep cause, the part where Tracy gets her top half chomped off scared me. And the part where the town went into a full scale riot with black goo all over it... *shudders*.
Nevertheless, it's one of the best reads ever. I love your rendition of the dragon and Steve Benson.
